The
Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life is an overnight non-competitive
relay raising funds for the Canadian Cancer Society’s research,
information services and support programs. The inspiring community-based
event involves teams of 10 people who take turns walking, running or strolling
around a track. Each team is asked to keep at least one member on the
track at all times. Teams
consist of individuals representing corporations, neighbourhoods, families
and friends. They camp out on the grounds of the track, enjoying entertainment
and cameraderie. In the Luminary Ceremony, candles are placed around the track and lit at dusk to commemorate survivors and those who have lost their lives to cancer. Luminaries are special candles that are placed in bags that carry the names of cancer survivors and loved ones. These candles are lit, one by one, providing light and inspiration as participants walk through the night. After
a highly successful pilot in Ottawa in 1999, the Canadian Cancer Society
decided to expand Relay For Life to thirty-five communities in 2003. This
exciting community event is destined to become a signature fundraising
event for the Canadian Cancer Society. To find out about a Relay For Life
