For
over 20 years the Annual Gem and Mineral Show held in July at the Carmichael
Arena offers treasures and prizes to over 2000 attendants each year. A
variety of dealers offer hand-made jewelry, beads and gems to the public
on site throughout the weekend.
In
addition a wide selection of exhibitors from the Canadian Museum of Nature,
Laurentian University, University of Waterloo, Canadian Gemmological Association
and Northern Ontario Relic and Treasure Hunters will offer rock displays,
fossils, minerals, gems and more. Amateur metal sleuths can also interact
with popular metal detecting displays and equipment.
Children
are entertained at the Kids Corner where they can learn to make a rock
collection or dress pebbles with funny faces. Demonstrations include silversmithing,
soapstone carving, stained glass and the art of making arrowheads called
"flint knapping"
The
Sudbury Rock and Lapidary Society's 70 members have been organizing the
Gem and Mineral Show for 13 years in Greater Sudbury.
